The Salvation Army now has a bigger and better crisis centre to cope with the growing number of homeless women and children in the Illawarra.

An official opening was held yesterday for the 30-bed centre, which replaced a nine-bed cottage.

The Army's divisional social services secretary Major Geanette Seymour said homelessness accounted for 42 per cent of clients, which ``we are finding to be an increasing trend".

``There is also an increase in the number of single women looking for help," Major Seymour said.

The house was supplied by the Housing Department but its location cannot be made public.

The official opening involved an inspection by invited guests and a public dedication service at the Salvation Army Wollongong Corps Worship Centre.

During the service a plaque was unveiled to commemorate the opening and dedication.
